Why Phoenix Heat Kills Garage Door Springs (and What You Can Do About It)
Most homeowners never think about their garage door springs until the morning the door won't open. In the Valley, that morning comes sooner than almost anywhere else in the country — and the reason is our heat.
What heat actually does to a spring
A torsion spring is a coil of high-carbon steel under enormous tension. Every time your door opens, the spring winds and unwinds, flexing the steel. Engineers rate springs in cycles — one open-plus-close equals one cycle — and a standard builder-grade spring is rated for about 10,000 cycles.
Phoenix heat attacks that steel three ways:
- Thermal expansion and contraction. Garage interiors here regularly swing from 60°F on a winter night to over 130°F on a July afternoon. That daily expansion/contraction cycle fatigues the metal faster than the same spring would fatigue in a mild climate.
- Lubricant breakdown. The factory coating and any lubricant on the coils bakes off in extreme heat. Dry steel-on-steel coils develop microscopic pitting and corrosion, which become the crack points where springs eventually snap.
- Rubber and nylon degradation nearby. Heat also hardens rollers and seals, which increases the effective weight the spring has to lift — extra load, faster wear.
Warning signs your spring is on borrowed time
- A door that feels heavier than it used to, or opens slower
- A loud bang from the garage (a spring letting go sounds like a firecracker)
- Visible gap in the spring coil above the door
- The door slams shut faster than normal, or the opener strains and reverses
- Squeaking or grinding at the torsion bar
If you see a gap in the coil, stop using the door and call us — operating a door with a broken spring can burn out your opener and is genuinely dangerous.
How maintenance doubles spring life
The single cheapest thing you can do for your springs is keep them lubricated and balanced.
